The keyword every family law firm buys is the last one their client will ever type.

Divorce lawyer plus a city name is a terminal query. By the time somebody types it, the decision to hire is already made and the only remaining question is which firm. This guide is about the weeks before it.

Competition for that one moment is why the term is the most expensive in the practice area, and why buying it is the least efficient way to spend a small budget. The weeks before it are almost uncontested. What follows is what happens in those weeks, how to find the queries, and how to structure pages that answer them without overreaching.

01The shape of the research phase

A person considering divorce typically moves through three stages, and only the third produces the query firms compete over. The first is private and factual. What am I entitled to, what happens to the house, is this even grounds. The second is procedural. How long does it take, what does it cost, do I have to go to court. The third is selection, and it is short.

Stages one and two can run for months, and they generate far more search volume in total than the selection query does. They also happen almost entirely on mobile, often late at night, and frequently in a private browsing window, which is worth knowing because it means the visit will not be attributed cleanly and the reader will very likely arrive again later by a different route.

That attribution problem is the reason this strategy is unpopular with agencies that report on last click. The page that did the work is rarely the page credited with the conversion, and an agency paid on attributed leads has every incentive to keep spending on the terminal term where the credit is unambiguous.

A worked example: one cluster

Five queries, two pages, one terminal term. The two pages are cheap to rank and they carry the reader for weeks. The terminal term is expensive and carries them for four minutes.

Notice that the two factual queries share a page. This is the part most firms get wrong in the other direction, building a separate page for every phrasing and ending up with four near duplicates that compete with each other. One page per question, not one page per query string.

02How to find the clusters

Three sources, in descending order of usefulness and ascending order of convenience.

Your own consultations. The questions people actually ask in a first meeting are the questions they searched the week before. Most firms have this data and never write it down. Ten minutes with whoever handles intake will produce a better list than any keyword tool.

The search results themselves. People also ask boxes, related searches, and the autocomplete on a phone in a private window are all free, all current, and all reflect what is genuinely being typed rather than what a tool estimates.

Keyword tools, last. They are useful for confirming a cluster has volume and useless for discovering it, because these queries are long, varied, and individually low volume. A cluster of forty phrasings at ten searches a month each will show as forty near zero rows and get filtered out by anyone sorting by volume.

03How to write them without overreaching

This is where most firms either refuse to publish anything, or publish something that reads as advice. The workable position sits between the two. Explain how a process generally works, name the factors that usually matter, and be explicit that outcomes depend on the specific facts and on the state. Hedge the general statements and refer the specifics to a consultation, which is also where the value is.

Every state differs, some materially, and equitable distribution states and community property states produce genuinely different answers to the same question. A page that ignores that is both less useful and more exposed. A page that acknowledges it and says which state it is written for is more useful and ranks better, because it matches how people search.

The structural discipline that matters most: answer the question in the first sentence. Not after a paragraph establishing that divorce is a difficult time, and not after a heading that restates the question. This is what makes a page useful to a reader who is scanning at midnight, and it is the same thing that makes a passage quotable by an AI assistant, which is increasingly where these questions get asked first.

This guide is written by a marketing agency. It is not legal or ethics advice, it does not state any state rules, and your firm should confirm current advertising and content requirements with its own bar before publishing anything.

04What it looks like after six months

Expect the situational pages to start moving first, because they are less contested. Expect the terminal terms to move last, or not at all in a competitive county, and expect the useful early signal to be consultations that mention a specific article rather than position changes on a rank tracker.

The metric that matters is the consultation to retainer rate on search sourced inquiries. A reader who arrived through a situational page has usually spent longer with your firm writing before calling, and tends to arrive better informed. That shows up in conversion rather than in traffic, which is why traffic is a poor way to judge this work.

It is also why the honest version of this argument includes a warning. If your firm needs signed matters this quarter, this is the wrong instrument and paid search is the right one. This compounds over years and does very little in the first ninety days.

05The short version

  • The terminal query is the most expensive and the least efficient thing to buy first.
  • The situational cluster behind it is cheaper, earlier, and decides who gets the call.
  • Group queries by question, not by phrasing. One page per question.
  • Answer in the first sentence. Hedge the general, refer the specific to a consultation.
  • Judge it on consultation to retainer rate, not on traffic.
  • If you need cases this quarter, buy paid search instead and come back to this later.

06Where this interacts with AI assistants

People increasingly describe their situation to a chat interface before they type anything into a search box. That does not change the strategy, but it sharpens one part of it.

The passages that get cited are the ones that answer a specific question directly in the first sentence, without a preamble establishing that divorce is difficult. That is the same discipline that makes a page useful to a person scanning on a phone at midnight, which is why this is not a separate workstream.

Two things follow. First, structure each page around one question rather than around a topic, so there is a clean answer to lift. Second, hedge accurately rather than vaguely: a system summarizing your page will carry your qualifications forward only if they are attached to the claim rather than parked in a footer.

What does not follow is that any file you can add to a server buys visibility in these systems. An llms.txt file helps an agent read a site. It does not purchase a citation, and anybody selling that is selling something that does not exist.

The tools do the arithmetic this guide describes.

Set your own matter values and volume, see what better visibility is worth in signed matters, and get the cost per additional matter signed. Nothing is gated.
